Accused Rite Aid Shooter Spent Time In Navy

Posted: Updated:
EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) - We are learning more today about the man facing open murder charges that left two dead Monday.

Ricard Taylor, 34 is from East Lansing and 6 News Nick Perreault looked into his background.

We've heard several accounts from neighbors that Taylor told them he was in the military and now we learned he served in the Navy.

According to Navy personnel from the Pentagon Ricard Taylor, from Detroit enlisted in the Navy back in 2007 as a Seaman recruit. He was discharged seven weeks later in April, but why wasn't released.

We also touched base with East Lansing police who continue to interview family and people who knew the 34-year-old.

Lt. Scott Wrigglesworth says Ricard Taylor was in their system twice since 2007 as a witness to public intoxication.

"We really had no history with Ricard and really had no history at the 1800 address, that 1800 address, we just didn't, he was not on our radar, not a problem address. We didn't have repeated police calls there,” said Lt. Scott Wrigglesworth, East Lansing Police.

Wriggelsworth wouldn't say whether witness’s statements regarded mental health issues and records couldn’t be obtained because of privacy laws.

But Lansing’s Mayor Virg Bernero says they should be.

“We should put in the clear light of day exactly what his diagnosis was, was he being treated, was he taking medications, why or why not, what was the follow up, the public deserves protection and the public deserves answers,” said Virg Bernero, Mayor of Lansing.

Answers may not come due to confidentiality laws. Taylor is being held in Ingham County jail. He's due back in court May 20.
