Proposed Meridian Township Fire Station Suit Filed

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Plans for a new fire station set to be built near Central Park and Okemos Drive, remain under fire from Meridian Ttownship residents who simply don't want it there.

A group has filed another lawsuit in the hopes of stalling the process.

Will the new central fire station ever be built?

That's the question many people have in Meridian Township

Autumn Park condo residents filed another lawsuit saying the Meridian Township board violated the open meetings act during the March 24, 2014 planning commission meeting.

Five members out of the seven attended the meeting and are being accused of conducting business and influencing the planning commission.

"The trustees could have watched the entire planning commission meeting on tv. They chose not to do that," says Larry Nolan, attorney for the Autumn Park Condo Association.

Nolan, who was present at the meeting, is alleging these five board members spoke privately in the lobby and gave information to township manager Frank Walsh about the central fire station.

But Walsh thinks the lawsuit is uncalled for, "Its disappointing and its costly. This is costing the tax payers alot of money. The last appeal cost roughly $12,000-$15,000. So we'll probably be looking at that again."

And other township officials are frustrated with the situation and want to see the central fire station move forward.

"We have gone out of our way to accommodate those who live in Autumn Park condos, yet still fulfill the will of the people to build this fire station,  adds Milton Scales, Meridian township trustee.

The lawsuit will be in court on Tuesday morning.
Nolan and the Autumn Park condo residents are hoping the entire decision to build a new station will be called back.
