Kids Get Free Helmets To Promote Safety

Posted: Updated:
LANSING MICH. (WLNS) - With summer around the corner--it means lots of kids will outside more. One local event is hoping to keep them safe while they ride their bikes. The12th annual “Heads up for Safety Day” gave away hundreds of free helmets to protect kids in mid-Michigan.

Kids, like Aaron Mercer.

“To ride on your bike...if you crash, you wouldn't split your head open or anything. It would be safer, it would be more secure, it would be more helpful,” said Mercer.

The hope is getting kids used to wearing a helmet at a young age so it will become second nature as they get older.

“Lets develop a habit wearing a bike helmet when you're very young and that habit will hopefully continue with you as you go through life” said George Sinas, sponsor with Sinas Dramis law firm.

But organizers say just wearing a helmet isn't enough--it has to fit the head correctly to actually help protect the rider.

“It’s just as important to not only have a helmet but have it fitted the right way so that your child or loved one is safe from injury, said Eric Hannah, sponsor with Origami Brain Injury Rehab Center.

As for Mercer, he plans on wearing his helmet for a long time.

“Helmets are they are very safe,” said Mercer.
