East Lansing Art Festival Promotes Local Business

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Beautiful weather set the scene for East Lansing's 51st annual Art Festival Sunday.

From flipping through pictures, to checking out paintings, sculptures and jewelry, this weekend's East Lansing Art Festival drew in about 70,000 people, who not only enjoyed the art, but also East Lansing businesses.

"We can go from just being full to having a line down the street and down the stairs in just hours," said Johnny Vlahakis, the general manager at El Azteco.

"It's a different clientele that comes down during art festival, so, I think we're pretty happy with it," said Dan Tyler, the general manager at Peppino's.

Tyler says road closures for the festival hurt business on Friday, but they're making up for it this weekend with a steady crowd.

Out of more than 550 applicants, 186 artists from across the country got to display their work this weekend to larger crowds than ever before.

"As we continue to raise the caliber of art at this festival, not only does it draw in for the artists who come here and stay here, eat here, but we have people who actually travel from outside the Lansing area to come here specifically to buy art from these artists," said Andrew Sandstedt, a board chairman for the East Lansing Art Festival.

Larger crowds not means more money for the artists, but for local businesses, too.

East Lansing business owners say they're preparing for a busy summer, with the Jazz Festival in June and the Folk Fest this August.
