(WLNS) - It's time to buckle up. "Click it or ticket" it's a catchy phrase commonly used by police.
But its also a simple phrase that can reduce traffic deaths and injuries all by using a seat bealt.
Starting today law enforcement agencies across the state are stepping up seat belt enforcement for the annual campaign so that you'll safely make it home to your family for Memorial Day.
Officials are saying this campaign will be bigger than ever before this year.
Starting today and through this weekend motorists could find themselves on the receiving end of a pretty hefty fine for not wearing their seatbelt: a $65 fine.
And of course during any holiday week or weekend we see an increase in police. But during this travel week we're looking at police conducting the seatbelt enforcment zones in more than 40 counties.
Last year local police departments conducted the federally funded seatbelt enforcement zones through 26 counties but this year officials have upped checkpoints to more than 14 additional counties.
And as we approach Memorial Day weekend police want you to be aware of the importance of the campaign. So today at 10am at Spartan Stadium officials will be onsite with information on the campaign.
The event is open to the public and will be in full force until next Monday.
