Lansing City Council Approves Deficit-Free Budget

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Lansing has its budget for 2014-2015.

The City Council approved the $118.5 Million plan during its meeting Monday night.

It's a 2.5% increase from last year.

It's also the first budget under Mayor Virg Bernero that doesn't have a deficit attached to it.

Just over 20% of the budget is expected to go to retiree pensions and healthcare.

Short term, it's good news but the city still has long term obligations to pensions and healthcare that will need to be addressed.

The budget will go into affect when the fiscal year begins on July 1st.

The City Council also approved funding for the police department to move its north precinct to the Hill Center.

The move has been in the works for some time but needed council approval before going forward.

The precinct's move is only considered temporary.

Lansing is currently looking for a building the city can own and once they have that building the city plans to move the precinct to that new permanent location.
