Proposed Sand, Gravel Mine Tabled For 6 Months

Posted: Updated:

LYNDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Plans for a sand and gravel mine in Washtenaw County that have drawn opposition from some residents are tabled for six months.

McCoig Materials Inc. agreed Monday to the delay in its application for a special use permit after a recommendation from Lyndon Township officials.

McCoig wants to operate the mine near Chelsea, about 45 miles west of Detroit. The plans need approval from the township planning commission and others. Some area residents say it will change their rural community and increase truck traffic.

Randall Kraker, an attorney representing McCoig, says the company wants to work as cooperatively as possible with area communities. McCoig wants to mine the site for about 30 years, after which time Stofer Hill would be transformed into a lake.
