Saginaw City Council Rejects Anti-Discrimination Measure

Posted: Updated:

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - The City Council in Saginaw has rejected a proposed ordinance to guarantee city residents and visitors equal treatment in employment and public accommodations, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The 9-0 vote early Tuesday came after a meeting that began Monday night.

The ordinance was championed by Councilwoman Annie Boensch, who said the outcome was disappointing. She says she voted no because she didn't want the ordinance brought for a vote so soon.

City Council voted in April to postpone indefinitely consideration of the ordinance, which the city attorney advised was effectively the same as rejecting it entirely. After that decision, some amendments were drafted, but a vote on the ordinance was called at Monday's meeting.

Some other Michigan communities have similar gay rights measures.
