Former Detroit Water Boss To Get Sentence

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - The corruption case of a former Detroit mayor and his allies isn't over yet.

Former water department boss Victor Mercado is returning to federal court Wednesday afternoon for his sentence for conspiracy. He pleaded guilty in 2012 while on trial with former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and others.

Mercado didn't get any bribes. But he admits helping Kilpatrick pal Bobby Ferguson get excavation contracts worth millions of dollars.

Prosecutors are asking for an 18-month prison sentence for Mercado, while he hopes to get probation.

Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year prison sentence. Derrick Miller will be sentenced on May 29. He's known Kilpatrick since childhood and testified against him at trial.
