About 800 Gallons Of Oil, Hydraulic Fluid Spill Into Grand River

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - The Environmental Protection Agency says it's a big spill, close to 800 gallons of used motor oil and hydraulic fluid spilled into the Grand River in Jackson over the weekend.

Four days later, the city, EPA and Environmental Quality are still trying to figure out how it got there and who's responsible.

6 News Nick Perreault caught up with crews cleaning up the mess.

"They came out and put some sorbent booms out around the outfall pipe here and it seemed to contain the oil,” said Donald Tucker, Jackson wastewater treatment superintendent.

Which DEQ samples would show was hydraulic fluid and used motor oil. Wastewater Superintendent Donald Tucker thought most had collected around Lions Park, near a storm water drain.

"There are industries around here and our industrial pre-treatment program is investigating.”

But where exactly is still unknown and rain Wednesday showed some 800 gallons had spilled into the Grand River.

So now on day four the city, DEQ and EPA are still working to make sure it's only 800 gallons.

"Why wait until today to release hey avoid the park avoid a big section along the Grand River because of this spill, well, it was unknown until the rain event how big this was, I thought we had it contained."

For now the city's failure to contain it doesn't look like it will cost them.

Both the city of Jackson as well as the Environmental Protection Agency says they will review how this process was handled from start to finish, but say right now the talk of fines and investigation would be premature.

"We're going to evaluate this, we've already discussed how maybe we can set up plans to be better prepared in the future,” said Tricia Edwards, on-site coordinator, U.S., EPA.

Now it's tackling the task at hand and cleaning up this mess.
