Trees Being Cleared for New Meridian Twp. Fire Station

Posted: Updated:
OKEMOS, MICH. (WLNS) - The sounds of chainsaws and hammers is something Autumn Park Condominium residents in Meridian Township might be hearing a lot more of very soon.

“I am feeling frustrated, angry and disgusted,” said Susan Simkin, resident oat Autumn Park Condominiums.

It’s all because of the brand new fire station that's being built right across the street from them.

It’s an issue between the condo residents and the township that ended up in court...twice. And cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Just this week an Ingham county judge denied the condo's plea for a temporary restraining order--clearing the way for construction that starts today.

But resident’s aren’t so happy that this is going on and want to stop it.

“What we're saying is put where it will do the most good it in a commercial area, where it legally belongs,” said Simkin.

Simkin adds that although they have lost twice in court, the condo residents will continue to fight to try and stop

“We will continue to fight it,” said Simkin.

But firefighters think the whole thing has been a long time coming.

“We've been waiting for this moment for almost two years now and we all thought it would start a lot sooner,” said Bill Priese, EMS/Training Chief for Meridian Township Fire Department.

And firefighter say they just want to move forward with the project so they can do what they do best.

“Our mission is to serve and protect the citizens and that’s what we want to do,” said Priese.
