Boat Travel Gaining Popularity

Posted: Updated:
DIMONDALE, MI (WLNS) - While gas prices will still be an issue, maybe you'll travel a different way this weekend, by boat.

6 News Christa Lamendola went out to a local marina to see how a local business is dealing with the demand of Memorial Day.

You may notice a little more traffic on the waterways this Memorial Day weekend. Chris Stevens has been in the boat business for years and he says business is booming.

“New boat sales are about 25 percent up from last year and even last year was a big increase from the the year before. We've come out of the downturn in 2010 of 11 and the increase has been well,” said Chris Stevens, GM Grand Pointe Marina.

So why the sudden increase? Stevens says unlike past years, clients can actually afford to own a boat now.

The economy's getting very solid the last couple of years with the market and such and there’s just an up in demand. People saved and got their expenses in line through the downturn and are ready to have fun with the family.

It's not just Stevens that's seen the increase. The Michigan Boating Industries Association says boater registration is not only up, but it's made Michigan the third largest state for boater registration in the country.
