Memorial Held For Rite Aid Pharmacist

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- A crowd gathered in Lansing Saturday tonight to pay tribute to Michael Addo, the man who was shot and killed while working as a pharmacist at the Frandor Rite Aid nearly two weeks ago.

Among song and prayer came the solemn reminder of the tragedy that took place in Lansing.

"We're doing our best to get through it. It's tough," said Philip Amoako, who was a close friend of Michael Addo.

While working as a pharmacist at a Lansing Rite Aid Michael Addo was shot and killed May 12th by a man Addo's family says he didn't know.

"When I heard the tragic news I was in denial, hoping against hope and bargaining with god to spare his life. Unfortunately he had already left us," said Nana Achampong, a friend and neighbor of Michael Addo.

Saturday evening Addo's family, friends and community members gathered at the Union Missionary Baptist Church to remember his life and celebrate his legacy.

"As sad as it is, I'm glad we could come together and show our love for Michael and tell the world that he was a great man," Achampong said.

The 35-year-old Mason man grew up in Ghana. He moved to America in 2007 and began working in Lansing in 2009.  Addo leaves behind a wife and 11-month-old daughter, who still live in Ghana and couldn't make it to the memorial Saturday.

Family and friends say they struggle to accept Addo's loss, but despite the heartbreak they believe this tragedy happened for a reason and say they'll see Addo again.

"There's not a shred of doubt in my mind that he will be waiting for us and who better to welcome us than Michael with his infectious smile, dedication to work and generous heart," said Achampong.

Family members invite the public to a candlelight vigil planned for Addo Monday at 7 p.m. in front of the Frandor Rite Aid, where Addo was killed.

A fund has been set up to support Addo's 11-month-old daughter.
