Eight Families Lose Nearly Everything in Apartment Fire

Posted: Updated:
Families are trying to pick up the pieces after a fire last night ripped through their Springbrook Meadows apartment complex in Blackman Township.

Fire fighters got the call just after 10 last night.

Keri Curling, who has lived at the complex since November says she was asleep by 9 before she woke up to sounds of banging and yelling.

“I came to my patio door, all the neighbors were out there standing outside and said ‘get out, the apartment is on fire’, so with no shoes, nothing, i grabbed my dog and ran out,” said Curling.

Flames ripped through the entire building.

“I saw the fireworks in the background and I thought maybe someone is lighting off fireworks and it’s just smoke from that,” said Heather Fisher, neighbor.  “But I walked down here and saw the whole thing engulfed.”

The building is a total loss. Eight families lost nearly everything, including Curling.

“I'm devastated,” said Curling.  “I'm a school teacher, my laptop is in there, my ipad is in there, all my school papers are in there.”

After battling the flames for nearly four hours--firefighters came back today to finish putting out hot spots.

“We expected to come out here and we left hoses out here so that if underneath all of the debris, it started to smolder,” said Jon Johnston, deputy director for Blackman Leoni department of public safety. “It would come back and that's all we're doing right here, this is routine.”

As for curling she's must now pick up the pieces and try to start over---but it’s already proving to be difficult.

“it hits you an it’s like why me,  it’s really hard,” said Curling.

Investigators say they think this whole thing started because of an electrical fire and .foul play doesn't seem to be a factor.
