Poet Maya Angelou Is Dead At 86

(WLNS) - Maya Angelou has died.

The author and poet rose from poverty, segregation and violence to become a force on stage, screen and the printed page.

She gained acclaim for her first book, her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," making her one of the first African-American women to write a best-seller.

Angelou spoke to at the Michigan State University graduation ceremony in 2005.

In her speech she emphasized that the grads' accomplishments mean something special.   She told the graduates that each of them was "a rainbow in the clouds; each had the possibility of lighting up somebody's path".

At that graduation Angelou was given an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.

Wake Forest University announced Angelou's death this morning. She was 86.
