Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - This is the time of year when school might be winding down but the pressure is building for 281 of the nation's best student spellers.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee opens today and Michigan has 11 students competing, including one from Grass Lake.

According to our media partners at MLive, the "word nerds" will begin the spell-off today.

Sean Hickey of Grass Lake won the Jackson Citizen Patriot spelling bee to qualify for the national event.

Thursday's semifinals are televised on ESPN2 and the finals Thursday night will be on ESPN.
