Ingham County Jail Heightens Security With New Device

Posted: Updated:
INGHAM COUNTY, MI (WLNS) - The Ingham County jail has a new device that may help to protect both the deputies and the inmates inside.

6 News Sharon Yoo shows us this new machine that keeps things safe behind bars.

A simple pat-down just got an upgrade.

Since May 1, the Ingham County jail installed a full body x-ray, just like the ones you see at the airport.

“People put things where you normally wouldn't put things. This will catch that,” said Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth, Ingham County.

Once the inmate arrives at the jail and is given an initial pat down they head over to the scanner.

"Come on through the scanner, step into the place with the white feet marks. Face forward, hands above your head."

Once the inmate is in the scanner he or she will be asked to do two different positions, so that they can get an image of both the front and the sides.

“You might have something and we might miss it. But once you get in here we'll catch you,” said Major Sam Davis, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Corrections.

And by catching he means inmates who try to smuggle contraband items such as weapons, cellphones and other items that may be a threat.

“It's become an additional tool for us to make sure that we don't let anything get inside.”

So far it's been helpful at picking out things officers miss initially. It's picked up, “pins and things like that we miss in the normal pat down. I haven't gotten a weapon or anything, but I predict we will.”

As for radiation concerns, the scanner is safe for inmates including those who are pregnant or wear medical gear.
