Charitable Gambling Group Challenges State Rules

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Some Michigan charities and gambling professionals are challenging the Michigan Gaming Control Board's rules reining in Las Vegas-style charitable gambling events.

Fourteen organizations have brought a suit in the Michigan Court of Claims. They say the regulations enacted two weeks ago are outside the board's authority.

The groups say the regulations proposed by Gov. Rick Snyder's administration are too restrictive and will force their businesses to close.

Legislation that would ease the new rules has passed the Senate, but it's unclear if it will pass the House. A legislative committee could have objected to the rules but chose not to after the board made changes.

Revenue from the events was $7.9 million in 2002 but jumped to $184 million a decade later.
