Lansing Schools Get Public Input On Strategic Plan

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - The Lansing School District lets the community sound off on the district's long term plans in a series of public forums which kicked off earlier.

The district hoping to use the best ideas
for the next school year and tonight residents showed up to a meeting at Everett High School and expressed their concerns and opinons about the district.

It's a board filled with thoughts, concerns and accomplishments.

"Really we just want their honest opinion about the way things are and the way they should be in their minds," said Debbie Squires of the Michigan Association of School Boards.

So the Lansing School Board set up this bulletin board to take all suggestions from the community

It's part of a series of focus groups to discuss the next steps for the district.

Community members come to the meetings, give their input, then anonymously the information is given to the district.

"But really they are the community schools and therefore it is important for them to have ownership and the plan that will actually guide the school for the next 3-5 years," Squires continued.

And at this meeting members community members focused on what the school district could improve on and many focused on the issue of safety.

"I don't think enough has been done as far as safety. I'm very disappointed. Not just with LSD but with most schools around the country," said Marc Foreman, Lansing School District parent.

Other participants said they were worried about the district getting smaller.

"If we start closing some of the high schools. We're gonna lose what's most important to the city of Lansing," said Eleanor Doersam, former Lansing School District teacher.

Community members hope that the district will take their ideas-, either spoken or written,  seriously.

And hope to see them put in to action to make the Lansing School District better
