Sentencing Today For Kilpatrick's Right-Hand Man

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's right-hand man is returning to Detroit federal court this afternoon for his sentence for corruption.

Kilpatrick has known Derrick Miller since high school and was the best man at his aide's wedding. But they went separate ways when both were charged with taking kickbacks.

Miller pleaded guilty and testified against Kilpatrick, who is serving a 28-year prison sentence. Miller is asking a judge to spare him from prison as a reward for his cooperation.

Prosecutors say Miller deserves a break, but they're still seeking a prison sentence of about 3½ years.

Miller pleaded guilty in 2011 to taking kickbacks from a real estate broker, money he shared with Kilpatrick. He told jurors how he once passed cash to Kilpatrick in a bathroom.
