Sinkhole Develops In Grocery Store Parking Lot

Posted: Updated:

WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) - A sinkhole has developed in a Winter Haven Publix parking lot.

According to our sister station WFLA, the sink hole is about 5 feet deep and 30 feet wide, however police say the parking lot continues to buckle in areas out from the hole.

The large sinkhole developed in the parking lot at the Publix located at 6031 Cypress Gardens Blvd.

Winter Haven Police say no injuries have been reported. FDOT crews are at the scene to make sure the roadway in front of the store has not been compromised. The parking lot is private property and the owners have contacted geologists to evaluate, police say.

At this time, there has been no structure damage to the building, which houses Publix, K-Mart and a host of smaller businesses. There has been no evacuation at this time.

Millie Dean arrived to her job as a floral arranger at the Publix at Winter Haven Square around 5:45 a.m. Thursday morning and noticed a buckle in the parking lot. She told those inside they better move their cars. She laughs that nobody believed her but now, more than 100 parking spots are blocked off..

As of 11 a.m., the Publix and all other businesses within the complex are operating as normal.

Dean said there's been no change in traffic coming in the store. Meanwhile, a geologist is expected on site about noon and will use a radar to determine the severity and whether there is a public safety threat.
