Summer Jobs Plan For 5,000 Detroit Teens Revealed

Posted: Updated:
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) - Mayor Mike Duggan says he wants to use donations and federal funds to provide summer jobs for about 5,000 high school students next year in Detroit.

Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones released details on the plan Wednesday during the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan.

They say $3 million will come from federal block grants, while $3 million to $5 million more will be sought from the private sector. They say they want area businesses to provide the jobs.

Duggan tells WDIV-TV that almost half of Detroit's teenagers are unemployed and it's crucial to create opportunities for them.

He says "it isn't that hard ... for companies to hire young people - one or two for the summer."
