No Prison Time For Kilpatrick's Right-Hand Man

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's right-hand man has been spared prison and instead will spend a year in a halfway house.

It's a big break for Derrick Miller, who was facing up to 10 years in custody when he pleaded guilty in 2011 to taking kickbacks.

Miller turned out to be an important witness for prosecutors. His five days of trial testimony helped convict Kilpatrick, who is serving a 28-year prison sentence for corruption.

Federal Judge Nancy Edmunds sentenced Miller on Thursday. Prosecutors agreed that Miller deserved a break, but they were seeking a prison term of about 3.5 years.

Kilpatrick and Miller went to school together, and Kilpatrick was best man at Miller's wedding. But they went separate ways when both were charged with crimes.
