Willow The Moose Makes Her Debut At Potter Park Zoo

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - She's just one year old, has long legs and a big nose.  Oh, and she weighs 440 pounds.

Not bad for a young moose.  It'll be a big day Monday when Willow the moose makes her debut at Potter Park Zoo.

The Alaskan Moose was rescued when her mother was struck by a car near Anchorage, Alaska.  She came to Potter Park last fall and is now ready for her first public appearances.

She is the zoo's first moose and eats a diet of willow, birch, aspen leaves and twigs.  Her caretakers at Potter Park are working with county parks, MSU, local tree services and others to keep Willow in a fresh supply of willow leaves to eat.

The Alaskan Moose is primarily a solitary animal that is rarely seen.  Willow could grow to be seven feet tall and weigh more than 1,300 pounds.

You can see Willow in the former ostrich yard until her state-of-the-art exhibit is completed next year.
