Injunction Stops New Rules For Charitable Gambling

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A judge has stopped new regulations on Las Vegas-style charitable gambling events in Michigan.

Michigan Charitable Gaming Association spokeswoman Stephanie Van Koevering says the ruling came Friday after a hearing at the Court of Claims in Lansing.

The new rules limit the number of days for poker rooms hosting "millionaire party" events. Poker rooms also can take 45 percent of profits instead of the current 50 percent split with charities.

The gaming association, 11 charities and three suppliers challenged the new rules, saying they exceed the authority of the state Gaming Control Board.

The state says charities got 81 percent of the money a decade ago but now receive much less under profit-sharing agreements never envisioned when the games began.
