Suspect Arrested In Shiawassee County Monument Thefts

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested a suspect in a string of grave marker and other monument thefts.

They say 49-year old Tobe Holifield of Durand is believed to be responsible for 47 incidents of stealing metal markers dating back to early February of last year.

Holifield is suspected of stealing bronze grave markers, historical markers and dedication plaques from bridges in Shiawassee County.

The total value of the metal is approximately $20,000.

Investigators say Holifield would locate the monuments, remove them, then cut them into pieces and sell the metal for scrap.

Holifield has been charged with two felonies including malicious destruction of tombs.

He is being held in the Shiawassee County jail.
