Woman Who Lost Home To Fire Upset With Suspect Walking Free

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - Rodney McKee is walking the streets in Jackson today, despite being charged with a serious crime.

The 25-year old faces first degree arson charges for his alleged involvement in a house fire back in March. The prosecutor says if convicted, he "could" face up to life in prison.

Our 6 News Nick Perreault tells us why some in the community are concerned he's not behind bars now.

As casual Rodney McKee walked into the courtroom, his attorney expressed interest in moving this case to Jackson Circuit Court.

"Wishes at this time to waive his right to a preliminary examination.”

Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka hopes skipping testimony from witnesses and putting the case and evidence from this March 4 house fire along Steward and Webb into the hands of another judge, means a trial.

"At this point the evidence appears strong, but that can change of the life of a case, but it's my expectation that this case will go to trial,” said Jerry Jarzynka, Prosecuting Attorney, Jackson County.

In the meantime McKee paid his 10 percent share of his $25,000 dollars bond so he's able to walk free.

That’s an unthinkable act for Kelly Sturgill-Welton, whose home was destroyed in the March fire.

"I'm still struggling to get back things in my life and he is still living high on the hog so to speak.”

Kelly's had to find another place to live, get clothes from a friend and help from the Red Cross.

"I'm going through what I'm going through and it's still a traumatization of everything so my feelings he should have to suffer to.”

Now the judge at the circuit level can change the amount of bond, which could bring Rodney McKee back in and behind bars, but that hasn't happened yet and until then Rodney McKee is free to walk the streets of Jackson

McKee was also in court for a concealed weapons charge. His circuit court date has not been set.
