Hope Sports Complex Can Sell Alcohol

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - The controversy over whether or not a local soccer complex can serve liquor is finally settled.

Emerald Morrow has more on what pushed City Council to allow alcohol and why managers say it could be a big economic boost for mid-Michigan.

When it comes to the Hope Soccer Complex Julie Mullins had been playing defense for a long time.

But on this night she scored a big goal.

Mullins said, "I am ecstatic with the reaction of the city council and their support behind this."

Council voted seven-to-one to allow this facility to sell liquor.

A move Mullins celebrates.

But one not everyone approves.

City Councilmember Carol Wood said, "The habits that it can form and the problems that it can have. And based on those reasons, I believe that this is not the right venue for this."

Carol Wood was the only council member who voted against the measure.

Other council members said they supported Mullins' proposal and didn't agree with opposition that the presence of alcohol would be a bad influence on children,

"It also sends the message that we don't trust our adults to be adults...I strongly believe we don't have to behave as children to be good role models for children."

Mullins says only 30 percent of the teams at the facility are youth sports.

Even still she says she expects and believe all will behave responsibly now that they have a shot at serving liquor in their facility.
