Worries Arise That Measles Will Hit Michigan

Posted: Updated:
INGHAM COUNTY, MI (WLNS) - Americans with a bit of a travel bug are coming down with a different type of bug, the measles.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the number of measles cases is the highest it's been in 20 years.

But are the measles common in Michigan? 6 News Christa Lamendola talked to health officials to get some answers.

Having a case of the measles is no longer a thing of the past. Check out these national numbers from the CDC. A total of 288 cases were reported between Jan 1 and May 23 of this year, the largest numbers since 1994.

About 97 percent of those cases were associated with importation cases who were not vaccinated.

"There are other parts of the world where measles and other vaccine preventable diseases are more common and then when people travel they import them back into this country,” said Linda Vail, Ingham County Health Officer.

But what about the measles in Michigan? The Ingham County Health Department says so far there are no cases, but the trend is concerning.

“When numbers start to go up year after year very rapidly, and as you can imagine 288 in one year turns into something and when the trend continues, that's where our concern is.”

According to the CDC, the outbreak is pretty close to home. Ohio is responsible for over half of the cases in the country.

Although there are no reported cases of measles in Michigan, states that are close by like Ohio are actually leading the country in measles cases.

So what can you do to protect yourself? Well the health department says make sure you get your immunization before you leave the country. And for those that don't want immunizations, you can always just treat it like you’re protecting yourself from the common cold. Make sure you wash your hands, cover your cough, and stay home when you're feeling sick.
