Irritating Ticks A Problem Due To Weather

Posted: Updated:
EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) – They can be large or small, but either way they're dangerous to you and your animals.

We're talking about ticks and as Nick Perreault tells us now is the time of year to make sure you're taking the proper steps to keep you and your furry friends safe.

Under the ears, belly and near the paws are common places you'll find ticks.

Dr. Bruce Mortimer from East Lansing's veterinary clinic says since April he's seen an unusual amount of these.

"A couple a week, we see dogs coming in with ticks.”

Dr. Mortimer says the weather's been ideal for their reproduction. They can be as small as a pinpoint or big as a thumb nail.

That’s one of the reasons why Melissa Strauss brought in her 8-year-old golden retriever Dee-Dee.

"Well, we live in an area where there is a lot of deer and plus we go up north and you just don't know what you might encounter when you go up north,” said Melissa Straus, brought in golden retriever.

But Dr. Mortimer says you shouldn't wait for your checkup to check for ticks.

"I recommend the once a month prevention and I also recommend daily checking for ticks too,” said Dr. Mortimer.

You can do that with a comb or apply topical medicine as a preventative measure because your furry friend isn't the only one at risk.

"Ticks can come on initially on a dog and then decide to for whatever reason not to feed on the dog, get off and potentially then get on a person.”

A concern as ticks can stay attached for a few hours up to days

"If you notice any redness or strange lesions or around where the tick has attached, see your veterinarian.”

To keep you happy and your pet healthy and happy this summer.
