Local Food Bank Needs Donations To Help Feed Children This Summer

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Summer is here and schools will be out soon too, but that can be a problem for students who rely on school meals for food.

6 News Sharon Yoo has more on Lansing’s growing need.

Summer means school's out, but not going to school means something a little different for those who rely on school meals, and the Greater Lansing Food Bank sees it all.

“Children are probably the biggest audience we have concerns about especially this time of year when school will soon be out and children will not be having their breakfast and lunch programs at school,” said Joe Wald, Executive Director, Greater Lansing Food Bank.

Just a couple of months ago from the holiday season, the stock room was full. It's only half full right now, and in 30 days all the food will be gone as the need continues in the community.

“Children are around more, they wanna eat more and kids love to snack in school,” said Joan Jackson Johnson, Director of Community Services, Lansing.

And without school to provide the meals, children aren't getting the nutrition they need. especially if they already struggle throughout the school year when it comes to food.

“Our study shows that children receiving free breakfast and lunch often miss about 8.2 meals a week at home.”

With the numbers for demand rising along with the temperature, the community is calling on those who can afford three meals a day to, “keep Christmas in their hearts year round. Because the needs certainly aren't decreasing. They continue to rise and more for some people than others.
