Rescued Dogs Receiving Medical Treatment

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - Tails were wagging Wednesday as 90 puppies were released from the Livingston County Animal Shelter and sent to other shelters for medical treatment and adoption.

The owner of what officials called a puppy mill has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges.

6 News Christa Lamendola got to meet some of the rescued pups today and says now the job is to find them homes.

There's no shortage of puppy love here, 24 of these Wheaten Terrier and Poodle mixes made their way to the Capital Area Humane Society in Lansing to prepare for adoption.

Just a couple of months ago these dogs were in a much different environment, filling the filthy cages of a puppy mill.

The owner pleaded guilty Tuesday to animal cruelty. Now many of the dogs are getting the medical attention they need.

“The biggest thing we see in this case when they were confiscated was just living in filth. So these animals were living in unsanitary conditions. So you’re gonna see that, with the matting of the coats and living in filth for a certain amount of time, will result in burns to the skin,” said Julia Palmer-Willson, CEO, Capital Area Humane Society.

When the dogs came in Wednesday many of them were so dirty that their hair was matted to their ears. Now not only are they getting a nice bath, they're getting the medicine and vaccinations they need.

Several of these four-month-old dogs are being medicated for parasites.

To prepare for adoption the dogs are getting behavior tests, vaccinations and eventually neutered.

But after testing and surgeries, these dogs will be ready for new homes.

They'll most likely be up for adoption within the week.
