Two Vehicles Hit By Trains In Same Location, Different Times

Posted: Updated:
MERIDIAN TWP, MICH. (WLNS) -  Two vehicles were hit by trains in separate accidents at the same railroad crossing in Meridian Township overnight.

The accidents happened five hours apart at the crossing on Okemos Road north of Grand River Avenue.

The first accident was just before 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night.

At the first accident a Hazardous Materials team from East Lansing was called to the scene after a train hit a car and sent the car into a propane gas tank.

According to the Meridian Township Fire Department a woman drove around the barricades and got stuck on the tracks.

She got out of the car, but a train hit the car, sending the car into a propane tank near the tracks.  That caused the tank to leak.

Crews were able to turn off the tank. The Hazardous Materials team checked for elevated gas levels around the area but determined it was safe.

Then, five hours later, another
train hit an another car on the tracks.

Police told our 6 News photographer on the scene an apparent drunk driver tried to cross the tracks and got stuck.

It has not been confirmed that he was in the car when the train hit but he was not injured.

The driver has been arrested and could face DUI charges as the investigation continues.
