Cancer Survivors Gather To Celebrate Life

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Every year at Sparrow Hospital roughly 2,000 new patients are diagnosed with cancer.

But thanks to modern advancements the number of those cured is growing every year and today survivors and their friends and family gathered to celebrate that achievement.

Applause was all around today as hundreds of people honored cancer survivors at mid-Michigans 20th annual "Survivors Day" celebration.

It's a time for families to grab a bite to eat, enjoy things like face painting and to share their stories.

And it's a time for breast cancer survivors like Leslie Hafner to say thank you.

"I think it's really great for us the survivors to see the communities support, it's a lot of good caring people who work very hard to make life a little better for us," said Leslie Hafner, breast cancer survivor.

Officials with Sparrow say right now roughly 98% of stage one breast cancer patients, like Leslie, are cured.
