Volunteers Constructing Wheelchair-Accessible House in Five Days

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Habitat for Humanity is always doing good work around the world and this time they're helping a family in Lansing as a part of their nation-wide effort to build a total of 300 homes before the end of the year.

Five members of the Home Builders Association and a family compete against time to put up an entire house in south Lansing that will suit their needs.

“Him and his brother both have cerebral palsy and they're both in wheelchairs so where we live now, it's really hard to get them in and out,” said Timothy Konwerski, home recipient. Those who are helping out are here to help ease the Konwerski's every day struggle.

“We have a wonderful family and the need is definitely there. And it's a great honor to be able to provide these guys with a family and participate in such an exciting build,” said Tony Scott, Construction Manager, Lansing Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteers have exactly five days to put this house together and they're focusing on making it wheelchair accessible.

Now with the house here they're gonna have the freedom to get in and out of the house and be able to move around with ease.

And for one of the members helping out, his brother's wife also suffers from cerebral palsy, so this project hits close to home.

“I see what him and his wife have to go through all the time with having to get up and down the stairs and just move around in different settings as far as restaurants or their home in general so it was something that I thought you would be nice to help out,” said Aaron Tobias, co-owner, Century Construction.

Tobias says the quickly-approaching deadline is “doable. Very doable. I think that we're well on schedule.”

The official move-in ceremony will happen next week. We'll keep you posted about the progress of the house.
