Cooley Stadium Apartments Get Council Approval

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Developers of the Cooley Law Stadium apartments say they hit a home run at the Lansing city council meeting.

Christa Lamendola has more a vote that will make future residents feel right at home.

It was the perfect pitch to build apartments behind the outfield of Cooley Law Stadium. Now with a 7-1 city council vote that vision is becoming a reality.

"We're excited to bring this to Lansing. We've done a lot of stuff downtown. But this would be a first of it's kind in the nation. It's kind of unique for Lansing to be a trendsetter, " said Pat Gillespie, president of the Gillespie Group development company.

Mayor Virg Bernero says the build will not only create more jobs, it will attract young people.into the city.

"These young professionals aren't going to the neighborhoods. They don't want a yard. They want a cool place to live downtown. They want urban living," said Bernero.

But not everyone was in favor of the decision.

"I'm not sure it's the responsibility of the taxpayers to help a private concern build those apartments," said councilmember Carol Wood.

Renovations to the stadium will cost $10.5 million. Another $12 million will come from the developers to build the apartments. But you won't see construction any time soon.

"The baseball games are over in September. Get started that day or even a week sooner. We can get some of the staging done and the entire off season so that opening day of 2015 the ball park improvements are all done and then we can get started on the actual apartments above," said Gillespie.

if you take a look to the right of the outfield that's where the apartments will actually be built. Those won't go up until 2016 but one thing is for sure: the plans for these buildings are 'safe' in Lansing
