Fighting Childhood Obesity

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - As the school year comes to a close, its time to think about keeping the kids and even yourself healthy and active for the summer.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem nationwide, including here in Michigan where 1 in 4 teens is considered overweight.

These startling statistics triggered the start-up of one local non-profit who has made it their mission to help mid-Michigan famiies: Diego's Place.

Diego's Place was started in February of last year as a result of Natalia Reyes-Gelista learning that her son, Diego, was on the border of childhood obesity. Doctors reccomended medical care in Grand Rapids for Diego but Natalia wanted to be able to provide Lansing families with resources to fight the growing obesity epidemic.

Diego's place is a non-profit that promotes healthy families and family fitness. The non-profit gives kids and parents a place to work out together and have fun by playing sports like basketball, dodgeball and zumba.

One of the main missions of the non-profit is to increase family time while cutting out the amount of time spent in front of the television.

Reyes-Galista says the non-profit also tackles bullying by talking with children about the issue and providing encouraging solving skills.

Diego's place family fitness is free every Tuesday from 6pm-8pm at Cristo Rey Church located at 201 W. Miller Road in Lansing.
