Hawk Island Looking For New Winter Activities Vendor

Posted: Updated:
INGHAM COUNTY, MI (WLNS) - Thirty days from Tuesday, Ingham County Parks would like to have a signed vendor for their winter activities at Hawk Island.

The county terminated their contract with an Idaho company after this winter season, but as our Nick Perreault explains the park says they promise to be up and running when the snow starts falling.

Today this hill at Hawk Island is empty, without activity or a contract.

"We didn't meet our financial goals; we didn't necessarily get the visitation we were expecting,” said Willis Bennett, Ingham County Parks Director.

Ingham County Parks Director Willis Bennett says they couldn't continue operating at a loss, so the county terminated their contract, opting out of a third year with Idaho-based Gateway Parks.

"It was an experiment no doubt about it.”

The hill at Hawk Island was the first urban snow park in North America with a rope tow and the first in the midwest.

"Like any new business you've got to try a few things to get it right.”

So the county is looking for another partner, someone here in Michigan to continue operation.

Bennett says this is not about finding a vendor to find them top dollar, but rather a vendor that's going to provide a variety of activities on the hill this winter.

"It was an extreme hill with a terrain park which was not for every snowboarder that was out there.”

Bennett would also like to offer seasonal passes and specials. "Something that's exciting to get people to keep coming back.”

The director says don't worry, thanks to a DNR grant the hill will still be in operation.

"Our staff is capable of making snow and creating that great hill that people have come to love.”

Bennett says with another vendor comes more snow and more options people can enjoy.
