About 12,500 In Michigan To Get Surgery Boot Camp

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - About 12,500 people in Michigan will get the chance to go through a surgery boot camp in the weeks leading up to their operations.

The University of Michigan Health System is helping roll out the program, which will be expanded to 40 Michigan hospitals. The project, which got a $6.4 million federal grant, aims to help people recover more swiftly from surgery and cut hospital costs.

The Michigan Surgical and Health Optimization Program will help patients do things such as walk more, eat healthier and learn stress-reduction techniques.

The program is a joint effort involving the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and the University of Michigan. Those involved plan to create a field-tested model that can be used in other parts of the country.
