ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., June 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IMPAXX™, the impact-absorbing foam credited with enabling NASCAR drivers to walk away from disastrous crashes, has earned Coastal Automotive Corporation recognition as a General Motors Supplier of the Year.
Coastal Automotive is among six interior suppliers to most recently receive this honor, and one of 68 suppliers recognized overall, putting Coastal Automotive in a class of less than one percent of GM's 19,000+ global suppliers.
"We are equal parts thrilled and honored to be named Supplier of the Year by GM," said Clarence Martin, Coastal Automotive President. "It is a highly respected confirmation of how valued our product and company are to one of our largest customers, and a rare achievement for a seven-year-old company supplying the automaker for only three years."
IMPAXX™ is highly engineered, extruded polystyrene foam manufactured to maximize efficiency and minimize weight, and is up to 50 percent lighter than other foam materials. Lower densities of the foam achieve the same performance as thicker amounts of comparable foams, allowing for design flexibility and increased passenger comfort, performing in less space.
IMPAXX™ is used in automotive parts including headliner and pillar trims, front and rear doors, steering columns and lower instrument panels, under carpet, in bumper systems, and in headrests. The product supports better safety ratings and requirement compliance, and is precision cut into simple shapes, eliminating the need for tooling.
"Our suppliers play an important role in helping GM deliver compelling vehicles to our customers," said Grace Lieblein, GM vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. "Supplier of the Year winners have outstanding track records for consistently meeting our business needs while also supporting our cultural priorities."
Coastal Automotive has been supplying IMPAXX™ to GM since 2010. The Rochester Hills-based company currently has 90-employees.
