Senate Adjourns Without Road Fund Vote

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - It was a close call but the state Senate once again fails to reach an agreement on funding for our roads.

The blame game continues after lawmakers are unable to see eye-to-eye on a bill that would provide the state with money to fix our crumbling roads.

It means we all will have to wait a little longer for a final solution to the problems with our roads.

Just to refresh your memory this bill would have increased the gas tax over time to adjust for inflation.

The vote failed 17 to 20 with Republicans heavily favoring the bill.

However. not a single Democrat voted for it to pass.

Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, Senate Democratic leader, said, "Sadly, we don't have a solution yet, and I think the public should be furious. My colleagues wanted to break today so that they could pursue summer vacations and i think that's terrible. Most people, in the real world, when your work's not done, you keep working, and that's exactly what we should be doing."

Republican Senate Majority leader Randy Richardville added, "it's way too little, way too late, but i think we've done a good job of saying let's do what we can on the short term problem, let's put a workgroup together to come up with suggestions on how to fix the long-term."

And while Democrats say the public should be outraged Republicans attempted to smooth things over by saying there is no need for panic as there is still enough money in the budget roads to hold us over until they can address the issue again in the near future.
