County Road Association Disappointed After No Road Funding Deal

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - It's been a bumpy road for lawmakers trying to come up with a permanent solution to fix the state's roads, but they recessed for the summer, before making that happen.

For those who rely on funding to repair the roads, they’ll have to "park it" for a while.

6 News Joe Khalil spoke to officials about that predicament and has more.

The Director of the County Road Association says they are disappointed in our inaction in the state legislature. Essentially they County Road Association in charge of the entire stretch of 76,000 miles of road in the state as well as allocating resources to different counties when they need to make road repairs.

"Real disappointed to see it all head south. We understand it's a difficult vote for legislators to take,” said Denise Donohue, Director, County Road Association.

Donohue even went as far as to say she didn't expect lawmakers to vote for a tax increase during an election year, even if it would improve our roads. Nonetheless that puts the CRA in a bind.

"We can't fix the roads and maintain the roads the way we need to if we don't get new funding.”

That means more patchwork on potholes. Donohue says the amount drivers would pay per year if the legislature did implement a 15 percent gas tax would be about the same as the average cost Michigan drivers spend every year fixing their cars because of pothole related damages.

At the end of the day she says, that's in the hands of lawmakers.

"The sooner they act, the sooner our county road agencies can get about our business of fixing the roads, maintaining a safe and efficient road system."

Lawmakers did recess for the summer, but they do have a few sessions on their agenda for the next few months. The County Road Association says they're at least hopeful that lawmakers will be able to put some sort of road agreement together by the end of the summer.
