Jackson Storm Water Fee Deadline Approaching

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - The latest developments concerning the storm water fee lawsuit includes a chance for people to get their money back.

However, you could have literally thrown that chance away. 6 News Mariah Harrison was in Jackson today.

She tells how a little mail-in card might have slipped right past you.

Clara Turner has lived in Jackson for 60 years. At 91-years-old when she saw the card she didn't think much of it.

"I thought it was nothing, an advertisement and I get so much of that you know I'm throwing it in the waste basket,” said Clara Turner, lives in Jackson.

That card is worth about $30 and it was sent to people in Jackson who paid a storm water fee approved in 2011.

It went toward keeping the cities storm drain operations up to regulation. The county and two local businesses sued the city, arguing the fee should have been put to a vote.

The city lost and now people have the chance to get the cash back.

"If it was a thousand dollars then I would want it,” said Turner. But Mrs. Turner says she doesn't need it.

"I want to give it back to the city and see what they can do with it.”

That's where the cards come in. If you would not like to be a part of the class action suit and you want the city to keep your money you need to have this card signed and in the mail postmarked by June 15.

Councilwoman Laura Schlecte hopes to buy a little time.

“We actually need more time to talk to people and let them know what reality is,” said Laura Schlecte, Jackson City Council.

The reality is the money needs to come from somewhere. “It’s a problem we're trying to solve to the best of our ability.”

The storm water fee proposal is on the August ballot.

People would have received these cards in mid-late April. Again, you have until June 15 to send them in and take your name off the suit.
