Study: Charitable Giving Up Slightly

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - How often do you give your money to philanthropy or charitable causes?

Do you have a preference of whether that money goes to your church or your local university?

A new report says, depending on your social class, you just might.

The report says that middle class donors tend to give to social services and church groups while more wealthy donors give to hospitals,
universities and the arts.

But after a closer look at the report shows that donations coming from the middle class are now at a stand still.

The "Giving USA" report says Americans gave an estimated $335 billion to charity in 2013 and that's up 3 percent from 2012.

The study showed that giving was up for education, arts and humanities and health organizations but it declined for church groups and only rose by less than 1% for service organizations.

Researchers are attributing these significant wealth gap numbers to recessions.
