Heavy Morning Storms Rake Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - Fast-moving thunderstorms roar through mid-Michigan this morning dumping heavy rain and knocking out power for thousands of BWL customers.

As of 6:30 a.m. about 2,600 Board of Water and Light customers were without power, primarily in the southwest portion of Lansing with scattered outages reported in East Lansing.

As of 8:30 a.m. there are reportedly about 2200 Consumers Energy customers without power.  Those outages are scattered from Portland to Ovid.

Some traffic signals along Waverly Road in southwest Lansing are not functioning as of 6:30 a.m.  Police remind drivers to treat intersections where traffic lights are out as four-way stops.

If you should see a downed power line DO NOT approach it.  Stay far away and call 911.

A number of trees and limbs are reportedly knocked down and it is unclear if there are any buildings that are damaged.

Some low-lying streets in the area are flooded.  Meridian Township police report that the intersection of Okemos Road and Grand River Avenue was flooded with some cars stranded in the water.  The intersections of Central Park and Marsh Road, along with Marsh Road and Haslett Road were closed due to flooding. They caution drivers to avoid the area and do not drive into standing water.

6 New meteorologist Emily Wahls is tracking the storms and will have continual updates online and on 6 News.
