Volunteer Effort To Keep Beach Bathrooms Open

Posted: Updated:

MARINE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Beach-goers in Marine City seeking relief from the heat will be able to get a different kind of relief thanks to a local couple.

The community along the St. Clair River cut lifeguards this year as part of budget-balancing efforts. Since part of the job of lifeguards was maintaining bathrooms, City Manager John Gabor had said bathrooms would be closed - replaced by portable toilets.

Charles Seigneurie, owner of Smashed Potatoes Catering and Food on the Move, and his wife Laura volunteered to maintain the bathrooms. They've also paid for a peddlers permit to park their Food on the Move truck at the beach for the season.

Seigneurie says they're "hoping it's a win-win." Gabor says the city will leave one portable toilet.
