NHTSA Opens 2 New Chrysler Investigations

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has opened two new investigations into Chrysler over complaints that the ignition key could shut the engine off and cause air bags not to deploy in a crash.

The investigations cover about 1.2 million vehicles.

The NHTSA says it has received at least 32 complaints from drivers who say the ignition key of 2006-2007 Jeep Commander and 2005-2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles turned off after they accidentally hit it with their knees.

The second investigation is related to Chrysler's 2011 recall of 2010 Dodge Journey, Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country vehicles for a similar issue. The NHTSA also received complaints from owners of 2008-2009 models saying they may have the same ignition key problem.

Chrysler wasn't immediately available to comment.
