Wayne County Officials Seek To Reclaim Properties

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Wayne County officials say they want to reclaim about 22,700 tax-foreclosed properties that were sold to new buyers who also didn't pay taxes.

Reportedly planned legal action is the latest attempt to end a cycle of abandonment and speculation following the treasurer's tax auctions.

Owners of the properties collectively owe more than $80 million and represent more than 78 percent of the 29,000 properties auctioned by county treasury officials since 2011. Most are in Detroit.

David Szymanski, Wayne County deputy treasurer, says the office "realizes there were abuses going on" with people "ignoring the rules."

Properties sell for as little as $500 apiece, prompting investors to sit on them or use them to collect rental money without paying taxes.
