Road Repair Funding Stalls

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Many thought this was the year state lawmakers would come up with a permanent fix to a perennial problem:

Michigan's crumbling roads.

But lawmakers couldn't come to an agreement on how to pay for it.

"Disappointment would be an understatement. We had a negotiation and an agreement between me and the other three leaders and the governor," said Sen. Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing.

Lawmakers left the Capitol for their summer break without a road agreement but with a promise, according to Senate Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer, that they'd get together over the summer to address it.

Whitmer says she's confident the legislature will be able to get something done this summer whether it be through informal conferences or workgroups--but so far any actual meetings have yet to happen.

"I've asked my staff every day has anyone reached out and started setting up these workgroups they said they were going to do all summer and the answer unfortunately is no," Sen. Whitmer said.

"I'm around I'm ready to work on this any time the other side of the aisle wants to sit down," responds Sen. Rick Jones.

Republican Senator Rick Jones isn't so optimistic both parties will find find common ground this summer.

They're still divided on whether to implement a small sales tax increase or add a gas tax and driver registration fees.

Reporter: "So you don't think this summer we'll see a package?"

Sen. Jones:"It's awfully hard to get people to vote for any kind of tax increase before an election. I'm glad you're asking questions about it because we've got to keep pressure on these guys to finish their work."

Whether or not both sides believe they'll reach a deal this summer both say they're willing to work for one.
