Jackson College Launches First 4-Year Degree

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Community colleges across the state are sporting a new look - 4 year degrees.

A bill signed by Governor Snyder allows the historically 2 year universities - to offer baccalaureate programs.

"We're launching our first program this fall." Jackson College Provost Rebekah Woods worked to bring the school's energy systems management baccalaureate program to life.

It all started with a name change.

"We wanted to ensure that students were going to be able to say that they received their bacalaureate from Jackson College because saying it's from a community college could be confusing for folks," adds Woods.

The program provides advanced technical, interpersonal and managerial skills necessary for a career in energy.

"The graduates are going to have the knowledge skills and abilities that they need for folks to hire," continues Woods.

Administrators at Jackson College worked closely with Consumers Energy to make sure that students coming through their program have all the skills to get a high paying job close to home.

"They really helped to give us that industry perspective to make sure that we were crafting the curriculum to meet the needs that they are gonna have in the energy industry," Woods explains.

The new degree is an extension of the school's existing energy systems program.

Out the gate - students are on track to an associates degree -- the following 2 years are what set them apart in the career world.

"Graduates could also go beyond just the energy industry specifically into any industry really that has their own energy production," says Woods.

Jackson College hopes to see a class of 20 to 30 students come fall.
